Quick Win Strategies

It is important that everyone in the school is involved with creating a welcoming, supportive environment for pupils with EAL and one of our themes will go into this in more detail. 

 

However, we thought for now it might be useful to have some ‘quick win’ strategies to use in all classrooms - whatever the subject being taught!  We hope you find these useful.

This short document produced by the DfE, although a little dated, provides useful data relating to pupils with EAL and some findings from schools visited during the project.

Something that we use a lot with teachers are what we call 5-4-5s. 

 

These are narrated PowerPoints which contain 5 ideas in 5 minutes. 

 

They therefore take up very little of your time, but hopefully provide ideas and activities which you can take straight into the classroom.

Having a range of strategies at our fingertips is a vital aspect of providing effective support for the diverse learners in our classrooms. 

 

The slides below provide 10 generic ideas for supporting pupils with EAL.

One of the key ways to support pupils with EAL, is through the use of visual resources.

Enabling pupils to access subject-specific language in the most efficient way is a key strategy for providing support. 

 

The following narrated PowerPoint provides ideas for this, examining the concept of Lexical Sets and how these might be produced and utilised to support all pupils.
